Pop-Art inspired by Andy Warhol

contributed by Ms. Bernice Buttigieg Class 4.1

During our first Art & Crafts session of this scholastic year, which is held every Friday during the last two lessons, the students were encouraged to create colourful drawings of various fruit. These were inspired by the bright and vivid style of American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987). He was one of the pioneers of the art movement known as Pop Art and his work revolves around artistic expression, portraiture and advertising.

The students were asked to observe and discuss various artworks by Warhol. We noticed the use of colours, the effect they create and how these can differ when juxtaposed to other colours. The students also pointed out that certain shades stand out better against particular colours and vice versa.

The students created fruit using basic shapes and adding details as they went along. They were encouraged to experiment with various shades of the same colour or completely different colours in order to create striking contrasts or monochromes. They also drew patterns in the background to create movement and add detail. Although some students were uncertain before starting off, they all completed their drawings successfully and meaningfully, which gave them a sense of satisfaction. This proves that art does not only lend itself directly to artistic skills, knowledge about famous artists and exposure to different techniques and media, but it is also a tool which instils self-confidence and enhances perceptiveness.
