‘Measurement’ in Year 2

contributed by Ms. Rebecca Scerri, class teacher Year 2.2

One of the most practical Maths topics which we do in Year 2 is ‘Measurement’. The topic ‘Measurement’ is very important since it provides a rich and meaningful context for use of number skills and of spatial concepts.

In one of the activities, our students had to measure specific objects in our classroom using non-standard units such as their interlocking cubes. In this activity the boys had to work with a partner as collaborative learning is also an effective tool to support learning. The boys were very much enthusiastic and engaged throughout the activity. When the activity was over, we discussed their results together.

Measurement is one of those skills that we use pretty much every day, so it is crucial that we give our students the chance to experience working on their measuring skills in a meaningful way, with measurement activities which are fun and engaging.
