One of the Social Studies topics covered in year 4 is ‘Weather’. The three main weather elements; the sun, wind and rain are studied. Among the many related aspects explored, we inevatbly look into weather instruments. Children are fascinated with and curious about how these instruments work and how they are useful to meteorologists. They are then thrilled to learn that they will be making their own instruments and eventually trying them out like meteorologists do.

Using easily found materials, children work in teams to assemble a wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge and thermometer. While they use the thermometer to manually show different temperatures, the wind vane and anemometer are tried outside after having been assembled by the boys. The rain gauge is left outdoors to measure the amount of rain over a number of days. Excitement is an understatement!
