The Evolution of Physical Education

contributed by Mr Marc Attard Magro, teacher of Phyisical Education

When I was a secondary school student, PE generally focused on physical elements; the development of motor skills combined with a component of physical fitness. This was done through the practice of traditional sports such as football, handball, basketball and athletics.

While the development of physical abilities remains a priority in PE, the subject has now greatly evolved, as it pursues the holistic development of all students. The PE curriculum that we strive to deliver to our students targets multiple domains of learning. Indeed, increased emphasis is placed on values such as honesty, commitment, respect and sportsmanship. We also target the social element, working on our students’ leadership and communication skills. The PE department strongly believes that our students’ self-esteem and their ability to engage in self-reflection are important traits that require attention in order to develop. Finally, we believe that integrating technology in learning is important for any subject to stay relevant in today’s classroom. Thus, we teach our students about how technological devices can help them lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Ultimately, we want our subject to be enjoyable, and so we use sports and physical activity as a means for holistic student development. All the above is done through participation in a broad range of sports and physical activities, including archery, boxing, cycling, orienteering, team games and much more.
