The EkoSkola Committee Project: The Impact of livestock production on our Environment

contributed by the EkoSkola team – Secondary Section

The EkoSkola Committee within our school consists of 8 students, and their main interest is to raise environmental awareness within the school community and further.

This year the EkoSkola Committee together with the EkoSkola link persons have decided to target two important Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 15: Life on Land. Through this year’s project the main aim is to raise awareness about livestock production and the impact it has on our environment.

The Year 8 students have worked on the environmental review, where the main aim is to gather information with regards to the students and staff members view with regards to meat consumption and their knowledge about its environmental impact. Whilst the Year 9 students collected information about the impact of livestock production on our environment, which will be presented together with the findings from the environmental review to all the students in the school.

Once all this information is gathered and shared with the school, discussions will be carried out, to offer a meatless day in the school canteen and to compile a recipe book with a number of meatless recipes. The EkoSkola Committee believes that with these two initiatives, they can generate more awareness about the impact our food habits has on our environment.
