These are words that appear frequently in texts read by children but they have to be learnt visually rather than phonetically, since they cannot always be sounded. We played a treasure hunt with flashcards containing these words or combinations of letters. The students were instructed to close their eyes and the teacher hid a high frequency word within the classroom. When the teacher asked the students to open their eyes, they were asked to look around the class for the missing word. Once they found it, they were encouraged to say the word out loud, using the ‘look and say’ method. This was a very fun and easy way of learning these words.

contributed by Roberta Mallia Class Teacher Year 1.1 As part of the Literacy Programme implemented in our school, in the beginning of November, in Year 1.1, we practised the pronunciation of high-frequency words.
