The students first got to know about
Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who was one of the first to make abstract art. Abstract
ART is made of lines, shapes and colours and it is not a picture of something
specific.

Piet Mondrian did not use a ruler to draw his lines. He
liked to use black, grey, white and the primary colours: red, yellow and blue.
In his paintings, shapes, lines and colour are used to create a visual
representation of feeling.

After learning about Piet Mondrian’s technique, students
were guided to create a Mondrian heart.
The students started off by creating squares and rectangles within the
heart template. Then they were asked to choose a focal point which could be a
particular colour or space in their heart. Subsequently, students started
adding colours to the heart. The lines were then defined using a black marker
or black paint. Students then had the option to either stick the heart on a
black background or to cut the heart out or to continue using the same
technique on the outside of the heart.

At the end of the lesson, everyone showed his work of
art. As Pablo Picasso once said, ‘Every child is an artist!’

contributed by Ms. Denise Xuereb, Year 4.3 During our online lessons in the first week of term 2, we did a Mondrian Heart for the ART lesson.
