As of this year, we have introduced Maths\njournalling in our Year 2 classes. Maths Journals are copybooks in which\nstudents are asked to record their strategy and thought processes as well as\nsolutions. While students learn how to \u2018do\u2019 Maths, they must also learn how to\narticulate what they are learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a new strategy for our students and is a\nskill which becomes easier with practice. We have started with simple,\nstructured journal entries which provide a useful insight into what the student\nunderstands, how he approaches ideas and what misconceptions he has. We also\ndate our entries since this will provide a chronological record of the\ndevelopment of a student\u2019s Mathematical thinking throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During one particular entry for Estimation, the\nboys were asked to trace the palm of their hand on their copybooks, estimate\nthe number of interlocking cubes their hand can hold and then use actual cubes\nto check whether their guess was close or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We try to include at least one Journal entry for\nevery Maths topic and so far our students have shown great enthusiasm and are\ngaining more confidence with the idea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
