Outing at the ST Micro-electronics

Form 4 students' outing

Wed 11 Mar 2009

On the 11th of March 2009, the students of form four were taken on an outing to ST Microelectronics in Kirkop. When we arrived there we found Mr. Adrian Vigar, the Human Resources Manager of this industrial implant. He was helped by Mr Angelo Farrugia and Ms Ritienne Farrugia
The first thing Mr. Vigar did was to lead us all into a hall where he showed us a power-point presentation about the factory and its products. The presentation was split into two parts, one was on STMicroelectronics worldwide and the other was on STMicroelectronics Malta. He then started to explain about the company’s mission which is “To offer strategic independence to our partners worldwide, as a profitable and viable broad range semiconductor supplier”. Afterwards he told us what their vision is to become the leaders in multimedia conversions. Then he told us that STMalta produces 3% of the products made but makes 25% of the worldwide profit. He also told us that STMicroelectronics employs 45,000 employees. He also mentioned that in 2007, they made 9 billion Euros profit and that they currently have more companies in China. He also said that their number one partner was Nokia and that ST helped Nokia make their cell-phone cameras.

After this power-point presentation he gave us some disposable plastic shoe protectors and he took us to view the factory but unfortunately we could not view all of it because some parts were strictly off-limits. In the end Mr Vigar showed us some very small micro chips which were used to make the Nintendo wii and he also took us to their dining room for some refreshments and food.
All in all this educational outing was very interesting and all of us had fun. At this point I would like to thank Mr Adrian Vigar, Mr Angelo Farrugia and Ms Ritienne Farrugia  and our accompanying teachers: Mr A Aquilina, Mr Darren Scerri,  Mr Rodney Bugeja and Ms Graziella Tully.
